About Us

DOPPIOJAZZ was born from the collaboration between Guido Michelone and Francesco Cataldo Verrina for the dissemination of jazz across various media: recordings, publications, and cultural events.

Doppio Jazz Web Magazine is a non-profit, transgenerational periodical that embraces diverse artistic sensibilities and imposes no boundaries on the concept or definition of jazz—specifically of Afro-American and improvised music. Its scope spans from pre-war classics to bebop, avant-garde to soul-jazz, funk to hard bop, European to contemporary jazz, straight-ahead to experimental, free jazz to fusion-rock, Germanic-Scandinavian sonic aesthetics to Afrobeat, and swing to world music. Periodic features explore the recording industry, sound reproduction media, as well as events and cultural trends surrounding Afro-American music at large. At the core of all our publications lie music, musicians, and discography across all eras and geographies, contextualised alongside sociocultural phenomena and historical evolutions within the musical landscape. All images are used purely for didactic, low-resolution purposes and are in no way exploited for commercial gain.

Guido Michelone is a Professor of History of Afro-American Music at the Università Cattolica di Milano and of History of Popular Music and Jazz History at the Vivaldi Conservatory in Alessandria. A former contributor to publications such as «Musica Jazz», «Ritmo», and «Jazzit», he has served as a music critic for «Buscadero» and «il manifesto» for over two decades. His body of work includes ten literary titles (fiction, poetry, and theatre) and approximately forty scholarly essays on jazz, rock, folk, and film scores, including the seminal volume Il jazz-film. He is also the author of monographs on the Beatles, The Clash, Fabrizio De André, and Vasco Rossi. For Diarkos, he published Rolling Stones, Non è solo rock and roll (2022) and L’Isola di Wight (2023). Guido Michelone has authored more than thirty books devoted to jazz.

Francesco Cataldo Verrina—essayist, author, copywriter, DJ, and radio host—has been active in the media landscape for four decades. He has led professional training courses, seminars, and commercial communications workshops for private educational institutions and organisations, as well as music and radio workshops at the Faculty of Communication Sciences as an external advisor. A radio and television host and writer, he currently produces a broadcast entirely dedicated to vinyl on Primantenna FM. He has contributed to numerous journalistic outlets and authored multiple essays on music and advertising. Founder and editorial director of the web magazine Doppio Jazz, he serves as music critic for the Giornale Dell’Umbria, writes for the audiophile magazine GRooVeBack (print and digital), coordinates the Perugia “Alberto Alberti for Jazz” Award, and acts as creator and artistic director of the Jazz City Festival at the Stix Music Club in Perugia. His scholarly research examines the emergence and socio-cultural evolution of Afro-American musical traditions. He has reviewed over twenty-five thousand albums within contemporary Black musical genres and published fifteen books on jazz. Currently, he lends his expertise to Jazz History courses at the Stix Music School in Perugia. In recent years, he has brought the narratives of his books to small theatres, clubs, and art galleries, performing alongside a live ensemble.

ARTICLE 21 OF THE ITALIAN CONSTITUTION

Everyone has the right to freely express their thoughts through speech, writing, and any other means of dissemination.

The press may not be subjected to authorization or censorship.

Seizure may be executed only by a reasoned order of the judicial authority [cf. art. 111, para. 1] in the case of offences for which the law governing the press expressly provides authorization, or in the case of violation of the rules prescribed by the law itself for the identification of those responsible.

In such cases, where there is absolute urgency and the timely intervention of the judicial authority is not possible, the seizure of periodical publications may be executed by officers of the judicial police, who must report the measure to the judicial authority immediately, and in no event later than twenty-four hours. If the judicial authority does not validate the seizure within the subsequent twenty-four hours, the seizure shall be deemed revoked and null and void.

The law may establish, by provisions of general application, that the financial resources supporting the periodical press be disclosed.
